From Surviving to Thriving

Helping individuals along their

mental health journey

Therapy...the Empowerment Way

Empowerment is at the core of my work as a therapist. I believe people are not broken—they are responding to their experiences with the tools they have had available to them. I believe deeply in human resilience, personal agency, and the power of meaning. I also believe in your capacity to reclaim control over your life.

My work is grounded in respect for autonomy, dignity, and self-determination. I strive to create a therapeutic space that is transparent, ethical, culturally responsive, and affirming, where clients feel seen both as individuals and within the systems that have shaped them.

My approach is integrative, drawing from multiple theoretical perspectives. While these frameworks guide our work, therapy is never one-size-fits-all. Therapy is adapted to fit you.  My role is to walk alongside you, offer perspective, challenge unhelpful patterns, and help you build the skills and insight needed to move forward with intention.

Whether this is your first experience with therapy or you’ve done this work before, I view this as an opportunity to deepen self-understanding, strengthen personal agency, and improve overall quality of life.

I am currently accepting new clients and would welcome the chance to work together and support the growth that is possible.

Your Therapy Journey

Therapy is never one-size-fits-all and sessions are adapted to fit your mental health needs.

All sessions are 53-minutes via telehealth (video) either once a week or bi-weekly

Therapy Sessions

End of

Treatment

This is a free consultation that allows us the opportunity to discuss your needs and determine if we would be able to address them in treatment together. If our work together is appropriate, we then  schedule an intake.

The intake is the very first session, during which we talk about your medical and psychiatric history, childhood, traumas, social support systems, and other areas of your past and present which will help me better able to help develop a plan for therapy. We will also discuss expectations and rights which you are entitled to as a client.

Sessions are 53 minutes long and are by telehealth video. You will choose how often we meet together, which is either weekly or bi-weekly. The number of sessions we have is determined by:

  • The strength of our working  relationship

  • Your treatment goals

  • How well you  respond to treatment

  • Your continued need

The end of our work ushers in the end of treatment and discharge. You are welcome to stop therapy at any time and for any reason. Likewise, I may determine that your needs are outside of my scope of practice, at which time I would refer you to a different therapist.

Insurances Accepted

It's important that you understand your insurance coverage. For in-network plans, I bill your insurance directly (usually a co-pay applies, which is collected at the time of service). Some policies may have a deductible that has to be met before the insurance will pay. I am limited by what insurance I can accept due to being an associate clinical therapist under supervision, with coverage determined by which insurance my supervisors are contracted under. With out-of-network insurance, you will self-pay (rates above) and you will be then responsible to submit documentation I provide for reimbursement. Even if I'm listed as in-network, it can take several sessions to determine if your insurance will pay.

Cancellation/No-Show Policy

I require 24 hours notice ahead of a scheduled  session for cancellation. I schedule around clients, and cancellations interrupt my ability to provide mental health care to clients who may need extra sessions. Cancellations under 24 hours will result in a fee of $50. Multiple cancellations in a row may result in services being withdrawn, to make room for clients invested in their treatment. Not showing to a scheduled session without notification may result in termination of services.

Therapeutic Specializations

I work with adults (18+) experiencing concerns such as PTSD/C-PTSD; Trauma (Religious/Spiritual, Violent, Physical/Sexual Abuse, Accident/Disaster);  End of Life/Grief Issues; LGBTQ Identity; Longterm survivors of HIV/AIDS; Suicidal Ideation; and Anxiety.

Trauma changes our relationship with ourselves and others.  While some are able to work through their trauma, many are held in the tight grip of the past, at the expense of the present. Even years after the event(s), the brain can remain ever on alert, mistrustful of others and in a constant state of fight or flight. In our work together, we address these, identifying and challenging negative cognitions, and down-regulating our body. Cognitive Processing Therapy is one tool which can significantly help decrease PTSD and Complex PTSD.

"The reality is that you will grieve forever. You don't 'get over' the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it." — Elizabeth Kübler-Ross

Our relationship with death has changed dramatically over the past 50 years. Yet, grief remains misunderstood and stigmatized. 'Why can't you just get over it'?' 'She's in a better place now.' 'It's not your fault. Well-meant consolations of little comfort. We turn inward, wondering if there is something wrong with us; not wanting to be a burden to others; consuming ourselves with guilt, shame, anger. We mourn in our own way and  time, and, while your journey is your own, I offer my companionship and being a witness to your grief.

I see your true colors shining through...So, don’t be afraid to let them show, your true colors, beautiful, like a rainbow.” — Cyndi Lauper

The  LGBTQ experience is vast and wide with the experiences being personal and individual. For many, it can be an experience of pain and fear. But at some point, each of us determines whether we will be the person we feel inside, or the person that others feel we are.

Whether you are still coming out, transitioning, or threw the first brick at stonewall, your issues and concerns will  be approached wherever your comfort level is, or where you might be at the moment.

Joshua H. Behn

MSW, MPJ, LSWAIC

I have worked in a wide range of roles that have including funeral service, community sexual health, and child abuse protection. I earned my Master of Social Work from UMass Global; Bachelor of Social Work from Weber State University; and hold an additional Masters in Peace and Justice from the University of San Diego. Alongside my clinical work, I am the author of Voices Amidst Conflict: Gay Men in Northern Ireland, an oral history project exploring sexual identity during the period of armed conflict  known as the 'Troubles.'

Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy traveling, gourmet cooking, reading, community theatre, visiting Disney parks, and designing ambitious Halloween displays. I have an obsession with the Titanic, and can rattle off a variety of impressive facts. I also am the dad to a feisty fur baby, a Balinese cat named Neptune. These interests keep me grounded and remind me that joy, connection, and curiosity are as essential to healing as insight and skill-building.
